Chronological summary of FEMU activities

1925-1981

  • 01/07/1925.- Foundation of the Association of Mexican University Women at the invitation of the International Federation of University Women.
  • 1927.- Incorporation of the Association of Mexican University Women to the International Federation of University Women under the management of Professor Guadalupe Jiménez Posadas. Mexico was the first Latin American country to join. Followed by Brazil (1931), Argentina and Uruguay (1938)
  • 1928.- Creation of “La Hora del Cuento”, a weekly children's story reading workshop in the public libraries of Mexico City
  • 1930.- Foundation of the Workshop School for Workers and Employees. Free courses were given in elementary subjects as well as practical industries (making hats, gloves, bags, etc.)
  • 1930.- Publication of the First Bimonthly Bulletin of the Association of Mexican University Women.
  • 1932.- Publication of the Anthology commemorating the first centenary of Goethe's death, by the Association of Mexican University Women.
  • 1932.- The poet José Núñez y Domínguez dedicated a cycle of Lectures on French women to the AUM.
  • 1933.- The publication of Mexican Universities begins: Bimonthly Magazine of Scientific-Artistic Culture by the AUM
  • 1934.- Opening of a dining room for low-income students served by members. Three meals a day were offered for $15.00 a month.
  • 1934.- Series of Lectures for the centenary of the death of Ignacio Manuel Altamirano.
  • 1938.- The AUM Organizes the Cycle of Cultural Conferences dedicated to Junior High Schools. Two conferences were given: The vocational orientation of Mexican Women, by Prof. Esther Santiago and The education of Mexican women as the only means of effective liberation, by Dr. Luz Vera.
  • 1939.- Opening of the “Instituto Universitarias Mexicanas” dedicated to the teaching of Foreign Languages, with address at 99 Doncelles Street (it did not prosper for political reasons).
  • 1939.- Under the president of Professor Otilia Boone, the Association of Mexican University Women acquires Legal Personhood before a notary public.
  • 1939.- The AUM representation is a special guest at the Annual Summer Dinner of the American Association of University Women, which was held in Pennsylvania with the theme “Mexico, our International Neighbor.” The Mexican Consul Dr. E. Treviño and the steering committee of St. Louis University were present.
  • 1941.- Collaboration with the Ministry of Public Assistance in a collection to found the Hospital for Incurables, in which he managed to raise almost $5,000
  • 1943.- Foundation, under the presidency of Ma. Teresa Chávez, of the Casa de las Universitarias Mexicanas to house groups of young university students.
  • 1947.- The AUM collaborated with the Ten Million Campaign (to raise funds for UNAM) by contributing $2,500
  • 1949.- Sending money and clothing to the International Federation of University Women to alleviate the situation of European university women during World War II.
  • 1948.- Foundation of AUM Branches in the interior of the Republic: Monterrey, Guadalajara, San Luis Potosí, Toluca and Pachuca.
  • 1951.- The AUM promotes and organizes all the celebrations that took place in Mexico on the occasion of the third centenary of the birth of Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz.
  • 1952.- Publication of the biography of Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz edited in spanish by the UNAM.
  • 1955.- Se forma la Asociación de Universitarias de Puebla, cuya presidencia inició a cargo de la Dra. Evellia Gil y Barbosa. En Diciembre del mismo año se inicia un ciclo de conferencias sobre temas variados (Sociología, Arquitectura, botánica)
  • 1957.- With donations from Dr. Ma. De la Luz Grovas and the UNAM, the residence located at Av. Río de la Magdalena No. 100 was acquired. It was declared the headquarters of the AUM and was called “Casa de la Estudiante Universitaria Ma. De la Luz Grovas".
  • 1962.- Under the presidency of Dr. María de la Luz Grovas, the XIV IFUW Conference was held in Mexico City, the first conference organized in a Latin American country. The then President of the Republic, Adolfo López Mateos attended the inauguration.
  • 1967.- Under the presidency of Dr. Paula Gómez Alonso, the construction of a new building for the AUM headquarters begins with the purpose of expanding the residence hall and offering cultural and social services. The building was located on San Luis Potosí Street No. 211.
  • 1971.- Under the presidency of Ms. Aurora Fernández, the Federation of University Women of Mexico is formed, made up of 37 branches in the Mexican Republic. The name and constitution of the Federation were legalized before a Public Notary.
  • 1972.- Dr. Mariane O. de Bopp creates the “Archive of Mexican Women” with 20,000 consultation cards at the service of the members of the FUM. The cards were available to researchers who requested them at the headquarters of the Federation.
  • 1975.- IFUW representatives meet in Mexico City for the World Women's Conference. That same year is declared International Women's Year.
  • 1981.- La Federación de Mujeres Universitarias de México realiza en el mes de Noviembre la III Reunión Latinoamericana de Mujeres Universitarias en Acapulco, Guerrero.

Refoundation

1988-2020

  • 1988: re-foundation of the Mexican Federation of University Women. It organized the Seminar “Women's Participation in National Life” in Ciudad Universitaria, with 38 presentations.
  • 1989/11/16-19: “Latin American Congress of University Women. Leadership and Development”, allowed the elaboration of the statutes of FEMU, with the support of the rector of UNAM, Dr. Jorge Carpizo.
  • 1989: Publication of the book Women's participation in national life.

  • 1990/09/19: the Mexican Federation of University Women (FEMU) was formally established.

  • 1991/05: Creation of associations by area of knowledge coordinated by: lawyers, Olga Sánchez Cordero; economists, Alicia Girón, and historians, Lourdes Alvarado.
  • 1991: Organization of the conference “The image of women in the work of Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz and Juan Ruiz de Alarcón”, held in Mexico City.
  • 1992: XXIV Triennial Conference of the Graduate Women International (GWI), Palo Alto, California. During this conference, FEMU was admitted as a national affiliate organization of the GWI.
  • 1992: Publication of the book The Condition of Women in Colima

  • 1992/08: XXIV Triennial Congress of the International Federation of University Women, Palo Alto, California. It was presented the proposal to include environmental education in educational programs. The motion was supported by Latin American countries to be taken to the United Nations.
  • 1993: Organization of the Congress “The Condition of Women in Chiapas” in Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Chiapas, and the Congress “The Condition of Women in Jalisco".

  • 1994/02/13: opening of the Care Center for Abused Women in the Municipality of Tlalnepantla de Baz, with the sponsorship of university students who are members of FEMU of the ENEP – Iztacala.
  • 1994/06/13: creation of Fortaleza, the IAP Comprehensive Care Center for Women, serves women and their children, victims of domestic violence, through legal, psychological and social help.
  • 1994/01/21: It was presented to the SEP the proposal to include Environmental Education and Human Rights in the study programs from the preschool level.
  • 1994: Demanded compliance with the Professions Law for nursing graduates; the accreditation and certification of Mexican chemical companies at an international level and the updating of the Technical Advisory Commissions.
  • 1994/03/09: thanks to its research “Women and Development”, CONACyT repealed the age limit of 35 years so that women could obtain scholarships to study postgraduate studies, by demonstrating the problems that women faced in their growing up years of their children.

  • 1995: Participation in the XXV GWI Triennial Congress “The Future of Women: Survival or Progress” held in Yokohama, Japan.
  • 1995/11/27: collaborated with the Ministry of Health in women's care programs, headed by Ms. Graciela Arroyo de Cordero.
  • 1995: Dr. Patricia Galeana presented the Women's Museum project within the framework of the decade for the Teaching of Human Rights convened by the UN. FEMU took steps to obtain the headquarters for the Women's Museum before various federal and Mexico City authorities.

  • 1998/04/17: It was presented on Radio UNAM the Long-distance Education program for the improvement and education of women.
    1998: Participation in the XXVI Triennial Congress of GWI “Globalization, connections through education”, held in Ottawa, Canada.

  • 1999/01/07: It was presented the proposal for a National Program Against Violence to the National Commission for Women.
  • 1999: Holding the seminar “Feminism in Mexico”, in Mexico City.
  • 2000/08/23: opened its Bibliographic Collection in Ciudad Universitaria.
  • 2000/09: It was proposed a University Reform with a gender focus, to include women in all shortlists for management positions and for the Governing Board to have equal representation.
  • 2000: Holding the Congress “University Reform and Gender Approach” and “Gender and Globalization through Education”, in Mexico City.
  • 2001: Holding the Seminar “Women in Today's Mexico” in Mexico City and “Humanism, globalization and empowerment” in the city of Oaxaca.
  • 2001: the artists Guillermo Ceniceros, José Luis Cuevas, Martha Chapa, Esther González, Frida Hartz, Federico Silva, Sebastián and Francisco Toledo, as well as Young Artists Conarte headed by Patricia Quijano and the Association of Creators of the Plastic Arts headed by Lucille Wong, donated their works to create the Women's Museum.
  • 2002: received accreditation as a member of the National Registry of Scientific and Technological Institutions of CONACYT.
  • 2002: Holding the Congress “The human rights of women in Mexico” in Yucatán.
  • 2003: It was proposed the establishment of the Juana de Asbaje recognition for university women, which is awarded year after year under the name of Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz.
  • 2003: Holding the seminar “Half a century of Women's Political Rights in Sonora”, in the city of Hermosillo, Sonora.
  • 2003: the radio show “Mujeres a la Tribuna” began broadcasting through Radio Ciudadana. FEMU was the first civil society organization to achieve this goal. The first program was dedicated to femicides in Ciudad Juárez.
  • 2004: Participation in the XXVII GWI Triennial Congress “Humanizing Globalization: Empowering Women”, held in Perth, Australia.
  • 2004: Conducting the Seminar “Analysis of the UN diagnosis on the human rights of women in Mexico” and “On the Political Rights of Women in Mexico” in Mexico City, and “Women and Migration” in the city of Hermosillo, Sonora.

  • 2005: Congress “Mexico +30-Beijing+10, The Human Rights of Women” in Mexico City and “Women as agents of change for humanism and peace” in Tuxtla, Gutiérrez, Chiapas.
  • 2005: FEMU began its participation in the radio show “México en Línea” and the publication of its online magazine “Mujeres, Derechos y Sociedad".
  • 2006: National Seminar “The History of Women in Mexico” in Zacatecas.
  • 2006/05: FEMU inaugurated the exhibition “The Struggle of Women in Mexico” at the Museum of Mexico City with a synthesis of the history of Mexico, through photo-murals and reproduction of texts, from its pre-Hispanic antecedents and novo Hispanics until women got the right to vote. The exhibition has toured 18 states of the country in order to promote the creation of women's museums in the states of the Republic.
    Within the framework of the exhibition, conferences have been held on the situation of women in Mexico, book presentations and feminist film series.
    The Women's Museum project is part of the Women's Museum Network founded in Merano, Italy in 2008.
  • 2007: Participation in the XXVIII GWI Triennial Congress “Working on the Millennium Development Goals”, held in Manchester, England.
  • 2007: National Seminar “The Reproductive Rights of Women in Mexico” in Acapulco, Guerrero.
  • 2007: Publication of the book Women as agents of change for humanism and peace.

  • 2008: Seminar “Meeting of Feminisms”, in Mazatlán, Sinaloa.
  • 2008: FEMU began an international campaign to collect citizens' signatures for the creation of the Women's Museum, managing to gather thousands of signatures.
  • 2009: Seminar “Empowerment, education and development” in Saltillo, Coahuila.
  • 2010: established the “Clementina Díaz y de Ovando” award, given to Dr. Ifigenia Martínez.
  • 2010: Mexico hosted the XXX IFUW Triennial Congress “Education, Development and Empowerment. Dr. Patricia Galeana was appointed vice president of IFUW, the first Latin American to occupy a place on the Board of Directors of the Organization.
  • 2010/08/04: within the framework of the XXX Triennial Congress “Education, Development and Empowerment” of the International Federation of University Women, the pre-inauguration of the Museum was held by the Rector José Narro Robles.

  • 2010/10: the exhibition “Women: artistic subject and object. A Look at female representations and practice in art” was presented with the FEMU collection at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana.
  • 2011/03/08: Dr. José Narro Robles, Rector of UNAM, Dr. Clemetina Díaz y de Ovando, honorary life president of FEMU, Dr. Patricia Galeana, founding president of FEMU and Lic. Marcelo Ebrard, head of the DF Department, inaugurated the Women's Museum. The first exhibition presented by the Museum was titled “Women for Women”, which contains part of the private collection of artistic works of the FEMU.
  • 2011/09: International Seminar Comparative History of Women in the Americas, in Ciudad Universitaria, organized together with the Pan-American Institute of Geography and History (PAIGH) of the Organization of American States (OAS) and the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) through its Humanities Coordination, the Research Center on Latin America and the Caribbean (CIALC) and the Research Center on North America (CISAN).
